Background of the Study

Health literacy, defined as the ability to understand, process, and apply health information, is a key determinant of healthcare-seeking behavior. In Katsina State, health literacy levels are relatively low, particularly in rural areas where access to health information and services is limited. Low health literacy is often linked to poor health outcomes, as individuals may have difficulty navigating the healthcare system, understanding medical instructions, or engaging in preventive health behaviors. This study seeks to assess the health literacy levels of residents in Katsina State and how these levels influence their healthcare-seeking behavior.

Statement of the Problem

Despite various health programs in Katsina State aimed at improving public health, low health literacy remains a significant barrier to effective healthcare delivery. Individuals with low health literacy often delay seeking medical attention, misunderstand healthcare instructions, and fail to engage in preventive health behaviors. This leads to increased rates of preventable diseases and poor health outcomes. This study will assess the health literacy levels of the population in Katsina State and explore the relationship between health literacy and healthcare-seeking behavior.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the health literacy levels of residents in Katsina State.
  2. To examine the relationship between health literacy and healthcare-seeking behavior.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving health literacy and healthcare access in Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the health literacy levels of residents in Katsina State?
  2. How does health literacy influence healthcare-seeking behavior in Katsina State?
  3. What interventions can improve health literacy and encourage healthcare-seeking behavior in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Residents of Katsina State have low levels of health literacy, which negatively impacts their healthcare-seeking behavior.
  2. Low health literacy is associated with delayed healthcare-seeking behavior in Katsina State.
  3. Improving health literacy will significantly enhance healthcare-seeking behavior among residents of Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on residents in both urban and rural areas of Katsina State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported healthcare-seeking behavior and the challenge of measuring health literacy comprehensively across different populations.
